The Picture Argues
A chart walks into your feed and something sneaky happens: your brain files it under data — objective, measured, practically arithmetic — when it should be filed under argument. Every chart is a stack of choices (which numbers, which window, which axis, which comparison) made by someone with a point, and the same true numbers can be dressed to say opposite things. The numbers topic on this shelf taught you to interrogate statistics in sentences; this one covers their most persuasive costume, because a misleading chart outruns a misleading sentence every time: it lands in the half-second glance, before the reading brain even clocks in.
Why pictures beat skepticism
The half-second is the whole mechanism. Text claims get parsed; pictures get perceived — the eye takes in the shape (the cliff! the rocket! the gap between those two bars!) and the impression is formed before any label is read. Chart manipulation exploits exactly this gap: the shape says one thing loudly while the fine print quietly confesses another, and most viewers never make it to the confession. Which yields this topic's core move, unglamorous and almost embarrassingly effective: read the furniture before believing the shape. Axes, baselines, labels, source — the boring parts — take ten seconds and defuse the majority of everything ahead.
