The Number Is Never Just the Number

"Doubles your risk." It's the perfect headline phrase — precise-sounding, alarming, and almost completely uninformative. Doubles it from what? If a daily habit doubles your lifetime risk of a rare disease from 1 in 10,000 to 2 in 10,000, your risk went up by one-hundredth of one percent — and the headline is technically true. If it doubles something from 10% to 20%, that's genuinely a big deal. Same phrase, wildly different realities, and the difference lives entirely in the number the headline left out.

That's the pattern this whole topic is about. Numbers rarely lie by being false — fabrication is risky and checkable. They lie by being true and incomplete: the real figure, minus the context that gives it meaning, arranged so your brain fills the gap with the most dramatic interpretation available. The defense isn't math skill. It's a short list of questions, asked reflexively.

The three questions that defuse most numbers

  1. Compared to what? Every impressive number is impressive relative to something. "Doubles the risk" needs the starting risk (this is the relative-versus-absolute trap above, and it is everywhere in health news). "Sales are up" needs up from when — last quarter, or the pandemic trough? A number without its comparison is a mood, not a fact.
  2. Out of how many? "3 out of 4 dentists" — how many dentists were asked, and who picked them? "Cases surged 300%" — from 2 to 8? Small bases make explosive percentages out of trivial changes; Part 3 is entirely about this arithmetic.
  3. Who's counting, and why? Not cynicism — bookkeeping. The seller's study, the campaign's poll, the industry group's report can all be accurate, but the choice of which number to show you was made by someone with a goal. The question isn't "are they lying"; it's "what did they choose not to show me?"

Why smart people fall for this daily

The same reason smart people fall for scams: the presentation targets your fast reactions, not your reasoning. A statistic arrives pre-packaged with a feeling — alarm, reassurance, outrage — and the feeling lands before any checking can start. Nobody has time to audit every number in a day's scrolling, and no one is asking you to. The skill is noticing which numbers are trying to make you feel something, and spending your three questions on exactly those. A statistic that's working hard on your emotions has earned the scrutiny.
