Terms & privacy, in actual English.
We wrote these to be read, not scrolled past. Short version: pay a dollar, get a topic, we don't sell your data.
Terms of service
1. The deal
Lacuna Academy sells access to written educational topics. You top up a balance in real currency; unlocking a topic debits its price from that balance. An unlocked topic is yours to read for as long as Lacuna operates, including future updates to it. All-Access is a yearly membership covering the whole catalog while it's active.
2. Your account
Keep your login to yourself; you're responsible for what happens under it. One account per person. We can suspend accounts that abuse the platform — scraping the catalog, reselling access, or attacking the service — and we'll always say why.
3. The content
Topics are for your personal use. Don't republish or resell them. Quote them freely in the human sense — a paragraph in an essay with credit is fine; a mirror site is not.
4. What our content is (and isn't)
Topics are educational primers. They are not individualized financial, legal, or medical advice, and reading "Contracts" does not make us your lawyer. For decisions with real stakes, use a professional who knows your situation.
5. Payments & refunds
Balance top-ups and All-Access are charged at purchase through our payment processor. Unspent balance is refundable on request to the original payment method. Topic unlocks are generally final — Part 1 of every topic is free precisely so you can judge before buying. Statutory refund rights in your country apply regardless of anything here.
6. The request board
Anything you post to the public request board — titles and descriptions of requested topics — may be shown publicly, edited for clarity, merged with duplicates, and used as the basis for topics we publish. You keep no rights over published topics that a request inspired; that's the point of the board.
7. Changes & endings
We may update these terms; material changes will be announced before they take effect. If Lacuna ever shuts down, we'll give notice and a reasonable window to export your unlocked topics.
8. Liability
The service is provided as-is. To the maximum extent the law allows, our liability to you is capped at what you've paid us in the past twelve months — which, we appreciate, is probably not a large number.
Privacy policy
What we collect
- Account basics: name, email, password (hashed — we can't read it).
- Purchase records: your balance ledger — top-ups, unlocks, adjustments. Card numbers never touch our servers; they go straight to our payment processor (Stripe).
- Reading data: which parts you've read and where you left off, so the reader can put you back there. Highlights you make.
- Board activity: requests you post, and an anonymous browser cookie that remembers which requests you've voted for. It identifies a browser, not a person, and is used for nothing else.
What we don't do
- No selling or sharing your data with advertisers. There are no advertisers.
- No third-party ad trackers on the site.
- No reading-habit profiles handed to anyone else, ever.
Cookies
We use the cookies needed to keep you signed in, keep forms secure (CSRF protection), and remember your request-board votes. That's the list.
Your rights
Email us to get a copy of your data or to delete your account and everything attached to it. Deletion is real deletion, minus records we're legally required to keep (like payment records, for tax purposes).
